Biografie Peter Musschenga

(find the English version below)

ENGLISH

I work as a multidisciplinary designer in Groningen. In 1998 I graduated as a graphic designer from the Minerva Academy of Visual Arts and started my own design studio. During my studies I loved to explore other disciplines such as photography and spatial design. In order to be able to offer a more complete range as a graphic designer, I acquired skills as a web designer.

I often work on many projects at the same time and do this for various clients: from theater to legal consultancy, from advisory committee to library. In this way I can alternate working behind a screen in a pleasant way with model making or building sets or installations.

My graphic work includes logos, corporate identities, campaigns, books, magazines, posters and flyers. Important recent graphic and web clients include the National Healthcare Counselling Committee (LCvV), Het KunstKwartier, Pro Facto, Lexnova and Yspeert advocaten (laywers).

Clear communication is my priority. My goal is to combine a timeless and solid design with strong concepts.

In my spatial work, the center of gravity in recent years has shifted from the stage to public spaces. For years I was at home in the city theater of Groningen making sets for the Groninger Student Cabaret Festival and Cabaret marathons. For the Royal Theater Carré I also designed the set for the cabaret marathon on the occasion of the 125th anniversary.

A recent spatial project in my homwtown of Groningen is the media installation for Forum Groningen: WalkWithMe. The interactive media and light installation that combines narrowcasting, news screens and light art is located in the entrance area. It was awarded the longlist of the London International Design Competition (LICC).

A stone's throw from the Forum, the stairwell of the University Library features the city's largest light artwork: SHA_RE. I made this kaleidoscopic waterfall of scientific research in text, image and video for the 400th anniversary of the University of Groningen.

In 2021 made a floating installation for Folly Art Norg (Pondering Around). It won the Audience Award and won the London International Creative Competition (LICC) (Category Creat (Art)).

In 2021/2022 the Iconic*Stories Pavillion toured the public libraries in Amsterdam and Middelburg. The pavillion celebrates 20 years of same-sex marriage and queel life.

In my designs I combine monumentality with attention to detail. Tactility, the influence of light, and perception are important themes in my work.

In the fall of 2023 I did an Art Residency at Casa na Ilha on the Brazilian island Ilhabela. I took on theme's I themes that I have incorporated (indirectly or otherwise) in previous work: reflection, perspective shift, slow movements, awareness and contemplation. I did this by studying the different appearances of water (surfaces) and air on and around the island as a basis for new work.
